Our mission is to foster creativity, preserve cultural traditions, educate, support wool growers and promote sustainability through engaging and hands-on learning experiences centred around wool.
Wool is a natural and sustainable resource, we believe now is a decisive time to explore and elaborate on the benefits of wool. Wool in School aims to lead the discussion as to why wool has its place in the conversation of climate change.
We encourage cross generational learning by exploring wool in its natural form, encouraging further investigation to its uses and benefits as a sustainable resource with a focus on wool innovation and investigation.
UNESCO strategy Education for Sustainable Development 2030, UNECE and EU Youth Strategy 2022 highlight the key role of primary schools in engaging with learners, parents, educators, and the wider community on the changes needed for a successful, just, and inclusive green transition.
At Wool in School, we believe that education should be as enriching and diverse as the fibers we work with. Our programmes are designed to bring the fascinating journey of wool into the classroom, offering students a unique opportunity to explore this natural and versatile material.
We introduce children, teachers, and families to the amazing qualities of wool and fibres, showcasing their sustainability and how they deserve a place in our future in the midst of our ongoing battle with climate change and environmental renewal.
200+ animals create wool or fibres
65% of global fibre production is synthetic

Lorna McCormack is the dynamic Founder and Director of Wool in School, an innovative educational initiative dedicated to integrating the fascinating world of wool into school curriculums. Lorna has a MSc. in Agricultural Innovation, University of Galway, comes from a Social Care background, fluent in Irish Sign Language, and a professional Fibre Artist.
Over the past decade, she has published books and learning resources for deaf children in Ireland. She has also consulted on numerous projects, including sign language character design, with a focus on early language acquisition for deaf children.
Lorna's passion for wool and sustainability education evolved from a question from her son: "What is Wool?" This question sparked a search for resources and support and engagement with numerous teachers, farmers, and associations. Lorna realised that schools suffered from a severe lack of education material that showed the history and amazing facts about wool and why it should have its place in the conversation of climate change.
Wool In School was born from this one question. Lorna continues to lead Wool in School with unwavering commitment, ensuring that the programme remains at the forefront of innovative and impactful education. Her expertise in agricultural innovation further enhances the programme's relevance and effectiveness, making a lasting impact on students and their understanding of sustainable practices.
Now with connections to associations across the world through membership with IWTO, locally with the Heritage in Schools, involved with United Nations The FLIARA Project . Lorna is also a Dandelion with Project Dandelion a female led global campaign for climate justice. As a Climate Leader Lorna understands every issue is a climate issue including wool education.
